Signs it might be your jaw

  • Pain or tenderness in the jaw, face or around the ears
  • Clicking, popping or grating when you open or chew
  • A jaw that gets stuck or will not open all the way
  • Morning headaches or a sore jaw when you wake
  • Flattened, chipped or cracked teeth from grinding

How we help

  1. Finding the cause

An exam of your jaw joints, muscles, bite and teeth, with imaging when it helps.

  2. Protecting your teeth

A custom night guard or splint eases strain on the joints and stops grinding damage.

  3. Balancing the bite

If uneven contact between teeth is part of the problem, the bite can be adjusted or restored.

  4. Habits and home care

Simple jaw exercises, soft foods during flare-ups, and ways to catch daytime clenching.

Grinding can also damage crowns, veneers and implants, so if you are planning cosmetic or reconstruction work, we will check for it first.

TMJ Treatment questions

What is TMJ disorder?

The temporomandibular joints connect your lower jaw to your skull, just in front of your ears. TMJ disorder (often called TMD) is the term for pain and problems in those joints and the muscles that move the jaw.

What are the common symptoms?

Jaw pain or tenderness, clicking or popping, a jaw that locks or does not open fully, headaches, ear pain without an ear infection, and worn or cracked teeth from clenching and grinding.

How is TMJ disorder treated?

Most cases improve with conservative care: a custom night guard or splint, adjusting how the teeth come together, habit changes and jaw exercises. Treatment depends on what is causing your symptoms.

Can grinding my teeth cause TMJ problems?

Clenching and grinding, especially at night, can overwork the jaw muscles and joints and wear down teeth. A custom night guard protects your teeth and can ease the strain.
