First aid

What to do before you get here

These steps are general first aid. Call us for advice about your situation.

A knocked-out adult tooth

Time matters. Try to see a dentist as soon as possible, ideally within 30 minutes.

  • Pick the tooth up by the crown (the white part). Do not touch the root.
  • If it is dirty, rinse it gently with water for a few seconds. Do not scrub it.
  • If you can, put it back in the socket and bite gently on a clean cloth to hold it.
  • If not, keep it in a small container of milk and bring it with you.

Do not put a knocked-out baby tooth back in. Call us instead.

A chipped or broken tooth

  • Rinse your mouth with warm water.
  • Save any pieces of the tooth and bring them with you.
  • Hold a cold pack on your cheek to reduce swelling.
  • Avoid chewing on that side until you are seen.

A toothache

  • Rinse with warm water and gently floss to remove anything stuck between teeth.
  • Use a cold compress on the outside of your cheek if it is swollen.
  • Do not put aspirin or any painkiller directly on the gum. It can burn the tissue.

A lost filling or crown

  • Keep the crown somewhere safe and bring it with you.
  • Do not try to glue it back on with household glue.
  • Chew on the other side until we can see you.
